Somalia Appeals for Military Help to Fight Off Islamist Militants

As fighting continued to intensify in the north of Mogadishu the speaker of Somali’s parliament, Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur, appealed to neighboring countries to provide military help to battle Islamist militants attempting to overthrow the UN-backed transitional government.

According to the AFP news agency Nur was quoted as saying “The government is weakened by the rebel forces,” and he then made a dramatic appeal for help stating, “We ask neighboring countries - including Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Yemen - to send troops to Somalia within 24 hours.”

Thousands of residents have fled the war-torn areas near Mogadishu and with the rebel forces now making ground in the north of the city the government is in desperate need of military help to stem the tide.

While the African Union has placed more than 4,000 troops inside Mogadishu those troops do not have the authority to pursue the insurgents, making their efforts to defend the city all the more difficult.

The rebel offense is being headed by the Islamist group al-Shabab which has already warned other countries not to get involved in Somalia. They have said any assistance to the Somali government would result in attacks in their country.
