A train derailment in Rockford, Illinois Friday night
left at least one dead and three others with serious burns.
The 114-car Canadian National Railway train derailed around
8:30 p.m. Friday. Rockford Fire Chief Derek Bergsten says 74 of the cars were
filled with highly flammable ethanol and 14 exploded in flames as the freight train
derailed.
The cause of the accident is still unclear. The derailment
did involve automobiles but details on the vehicle’s role in the accident weren’t
available.
Three motorist who were stopped at a train crossing
suffered burns. One woman was killed. The cause of the woman's death has not been
determined as Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia has not been able to
examine the body.
The derailment and fire caused the evacuation of nearly
600 nearby homes. No other details on the accident were available.
