Roger Federer will begin his quest for history on Monday as he searches for his sixth Wimbledon title and a record 15th career Grand Slam singles title, snapping the tie he currently holds with Pete Sampras.
Federer, fresh off his first French open title, is riding high and with Rafael Nadal out at Wimbledon the Swiss star is a heavy favorite to win his second straight Grand Slam event. He will take Centre Court at 1:00 pm local time on Monday to face Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu, a 25-year-old currently ranked 64th in the world.
Also taking Centre Court on Monday will be Serena Williams, seeded No. 2, as she faces Neuza Silva and that will be followed by Novak Djokovic, ranked No. 4, taking on Julien Benneteau.
For Serena, owner of a career Grand Slam, she’ll be looking for her third Wimbledon title but her first since 2003. Djokovic is looking for his second Grand Slam singles title having won the Australian open in 2008. His best finish at Wimbledon was a semi finals appearance in 2007.
Coming off a strong performance at the French Open crowd favorite Maria Sharapova will return to grass courts that have been home to her first career Grand Slam singles title. Sharapova has three titles and will be looking for her fourth as she opens with Viktoriya Kutuzova on Court 1.
Court 1 will also feature Robin Soderling facing off against Gilles Muller in what promises to be a battle. Soderling stunned Rafael Nadal at the French Open and eventually made his way into the finals where he lost to Federer. He has never made it past the third round at the All England Club and three times he has been bounced out in the first round.
