HS Basketball: Sullinger, Marshall, Gilchrist Lead Top Players at NBPA Camp

By Kyle "Scoop" Yeldell

Jared Sullinger, Mike Gilchrist, Kendall Marshall and Josh Selby were among the top high school players in the NBA Players Association Camp this past weekend.

The NBPA Camp, which took place at the University of Virginia from June 18-20, was considered one of the best events for high school basketball thus far this summer.

According to reports, Sullinger and Gilchrist were among the best performers in the frontcourt. Sullinger, the 6-foot-9 forward/center from Northland H.S. (Columbus, OH), utilized his 260-pound frame to dominate the paint, while Gilchrist showcased his versatility and relentless motor.

Many believe that Gilchrist, a 6-foot-8 forward at St. Patrick (Elizabeth, NJ), is not only the top junior in the nation, but the best player regardless of class. He injured his ankle during the camp and was held out of his last game, but he turned heads by the time of his injury.

Marshall and Selby, who both played in Washington D.C.’s Catholic school league, were considered the best guards in the camp. Marshall, the star guard for Bishop O’Connell (Alexandria, VA), utilized his poise, tall 6-foot-4 frame and immense passing ability to lead his team to an undefeated record, the championship and the Most Valuable Player award.

Sullinger and Gilchrist earned the Leadership Award and the Most Promising Prospect Award, respectively.

Selby, who led the camp in scoring with 16.2 points per game, showed great athleticism and strong will to penetrate to the basket. He showcased his shooting touch from deep and his court vision.

Selby, who spent the last two years at powerhouse DeMatha (Hyattsville, MD) will reportedly transfer to Lake Clifton H.S. (Baltimore, MD). Selby, a Baltimore native, will now join Will Barton, who was considered one of the top shooting guards in the camp as well. The two, along with Barton’s younger brother Antonio Barton, will form arguably the nation’s top backcourt.

Brandon Knight, the nation's consensus top player, also had a great camp, ranking third in the camp in scoring with 15.3 points per game. Knight, the 6-foot-3 guard from Pine Crest (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), exhibited exceptional scoring ability, athleticism and defense, especially after shutting down fellow top 25 player Kyrie Irving to just five points in a game.

Justin Coleman and Stacey Poole made the biggest jumps in the eyes of high school and college basketball recruiting scouts. Coleman entered as a relative unknown, but after consistently great performances and winning the slam dunk contest, he will move up in the national rankings. Poole, who ranked second in the camp in scoring (15.8 ppg), showed his streaky shooting, good penetration and solid defense.

Other top players included Fabricio de Melo, Joe Jackson, Derrick Wilson, Harrison Barnes, Reggie Bullock, Rakeem Christmas, Jelan Kendrick, Michael Gbinije, LeBryan Nash and Tyler Lamb.

In other news from the camp, Gary Franklin announced that he is opening up his recruitment after originally committing to USC. Virginia, Washington, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Baylor, Utah, UCLA, California, Connecticut and Arizona have all expressed interest in Franklin.

To add to the list of transfers from Baltimore, Roscoe Smith, the star forward from Baltimore’s Walbrook H.S., announced that he will transfer to national powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, VA.
