United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged Iranian authorities to halt their violent response to protesters and, according to his spokesman, “respect fundamental civil and political rights, especially the freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and freedom of information.”
Now into their second week, protesters have continued to fill the streets of Tehran in response to a controversial presidential election that handed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a second term despite serious irregularities in the voting process. On Friday Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei demanded protesters end their demonstrations and warned any future rallies would be met with force by police and military.
That warning has become a reality as supporters of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi have since been met by club-wielding riot police and gunfire, leaving at least ten dead and several more injured and arrested. The violence has drawn concern from the international community with many nations condemn the Iranian government and voicing their support for the people.
Ban Ki-moon’s spokesman went on to say he had called for “an immediate stop to the arrests, threats and use of force. The secretary general reiterates his hope that the democratic will of the people of Iran will be fully respected.”
Despite the watchful eyes of the international community Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has warned protesters to “be prepared for a resolution and revolutionary confrontation with the guards, Basij and other security forces and disciplinary forces.” They have also stated they will “firmly confront in a revolutionary way rioters and those who violate the law.”
