Tiger Woods has never lost a major after leading or sharing the lead entering the final days play. The 11 times he has been in that situation he has earned top prize at the end of the day. Going into Sunday’s final tied with Luke Donald at 14 under money is on Woods to collect his 12th major in his career.
His course-record-tying 65 on Saturday came despite Medinah laying claim to the longest course in major championship history. The 7,561 yards proved no match for Woods who collected eight birdies in route to his three day total of 14 under, the lowest 54-hole total in PGA Championship history on a par 72 course.
The man that enters Sunday tied with Woods, Luke Donald shot an impressive 66 on the third day of play. Trying to overcome Woods stranglehold on the final 18 is a daunting task. A fact not lost on Donald who said, “His numbers are pretty impressive, and that’s why he’s the best player in the world right now.”
Both players have a lot at stake in this final round. Woods has already captured one PGA Championship on this Illinois course in 1999; he is aiming to be the first player to win the PGA tournament on the same course twice. For the 28-year-old Donald, a win would be his first major title.
Tiger is coming off back-to-back wins at the British Open and Buick Open.
Mike Weir, who matched Woods record tying 65 on day three is two back of the lead while Geoff Ogilvy’s third round 67 put him at 11 under, three strokes off the lead. Sergio Garcia and Shaun Micheel each shot a 67 in the third round to sit at 10 under.
