North Carolina family housing found to contain mesothelioma causing asbestos

WCET news channel 6 reported that a family housing complex slated for renovation contains an alarming amount of asbestos. They also reported that some occupied units had asbestos along with empty units.

Community members have been assured that the asbestos poses no risks to their health. Residents of the housing complex however believe that the asbestos has caused the number of respiratory ailments in the residents who live in the complex.  The Wilmington Housing Association is investigating the resident’s claims.

Asbestos is listed as a carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency. It is known to cause mesothelioma, fatal cancer where tumors grow on the delicate lining of the lungs. Victims of this cancer frequently retain mesothelioma attorneys to attain funding for their care and suffering.

Asbestos abatement is scheduled for the complex starting later this year. The buildings that are known to contain asbestos up to a 1 percent have been properly tented to prevent asbestos exposure. The president of the Wilmington Housing Association wants to reassure residents that they are taking all the necessary precautions.
