A senior Haqqani leader known as Dilawar was killed Tuesday in an airstrike in Afghanistan, NATO’s International Security Assistance Force reports. The ISAF said Dilawar died in the Musa Khel district of Khost province along with two other militants. Dilawar’s death comes a week after Haqqani leader Haji Mali Khan was captured in Afghanistan’s Paktia province
Described as “a principal subordinate” to Khan, Dilawar “actively coordinated numerous attacks against Afghan forces and facilitated the movement of weapons," according to ISAF spokesman Lieutenant Jimmie Cummings.
“The death of Dilawar marks another significant milestone in the disruption of the Haqqani network in Afghanistan,” Cummings said Wednesday.
In addition to carrying out their own attacks, the Haqqani network often provides support for attacks planned by al Qaeda and the Taliban. The ISAF said the group helped the Taliban carry out the 2011 attack on the Inter-Continental Hotel in Kabul as well as the 19 hour siege on the US Embassy and NATO headquarters in Kabul.
