Explosion At Chinese Mine Leaves 16 Dead, 2 Missing

An explosion at a coal mine in southern China this week left at least 16 people dead and 2 others missing. The explosion occurred Tuesday morning just before 8 o’clock at the Anping Coal Mine in Guizhou province’s Lihua Township.

Authorities say 28 miners were underground at the time of the explosion. Thirteen miners were able to escape, but three of them died at a nearby hospital. Rescue teams are still searching for two men. No other details were released. The explosion is under investigation.

Deadly mining accidents in China are common because few mines follow strict safety standards. In August, a mine operating illegally in Heilongjiang Province flooded and 19 miners were trapped for a week before being rescued. One person died.
