Venus Williams opened her Wimbledon title defense run on Tuesday and found herself in a bit of a battle but came away with a straight set 6-3, 6-2 victory over Stefanie Voegele to advance into the second round at the All England Club.
Venus hammered out 8 aces and 29 winners in the match but struggled to find consistency with her first serve as she placed just 53 percent of those offerings in play and committed four double faults. Despite the setback in her service game Venus was never threatened by Voegele who managed just 14 winners on the day.
Venus Williams has seven Grand Slam singles titles, five of them at Wimbledon and another two at the U.S. Open. The American has reached the finals at the Australian Open and the French Open but lost to her sister, Serena Williams, in both of those Grand Slam finals.
