Dinara Safina did not get off to a very impressive start but the world’s number one did manage to do enough to get past Lourdes Dominguez Lino in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 to advance into the second round at Wimbledon, keeping her hopes alive for her first Grand Slam singles title.
Safina committed 30 unforced errors, twice as many as Dominguez Lino, but she did place 69 percent of her first serves in play and won 68 percent of those offerings. The Russian also managed to take advantage of her break point opportunities, taking six of her ten break point chances.
Safina has reached the finals of the French Open the last two years but fell to Ana Ivanovic in 2008 and then Svetlana Kuznetsova earlier this year. In 2009 she reached the finals at the Australian Open but again fell, this time to Serena Williams. Despite never winning a Grand Slam singles title Safina reached the number one in the rankings on April 27, 2009.
