After spending six months in custody Chinese political activist Liu Xiaobo has formally been charged with inciting subversion after allegedly spreading rumors and defaming the government.
Beijing’s public security bureau announced the charges on Wendesday, telling the state-run news agency Xinhua “Liu has been engaged in agitation activities, such as spreading of rumors and defaming of the government, aimed at subversion of the state and overthrowing the socialism system in recent years.”
Liu was taken into custody in December prior to the publication of a document, Charter 08, he co-authored encouraging change in China’s political system which included a new constitution as well as the freedom to assemble.
Liu is no stranger to Chinese authorities having spent two years in prison for his participation in the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989.
