Offensive outbursts and defensive pressure lead U.S. past Slovenia and into second round of World Basketball Championship

The U.S. used a balanced attack to dismantle Slovenia 114-95 in Group D action and improve to 3-0 on Tuesday night. Offensively the Americans were led by Dwyane Wade who contributed 20 points and LeBron James who added 19 to the cause.

Head coach Mike Krzyzewski continued to stress team play and a swarming defense as the game plan and few could argue the strategy. Using two separate units the U.S. was able to wear down Slovenia and capitalize on turnovers.

Slovenia started the game strong and led 21-16 late in the first quarter but the U.S. used defensive pressure and an 11-0 run to finish the period strong and lead 30-27.

In the second quarter the U.S. used an 18-4 run that left Slovenia little hope of catching the Americans. Supported by an aggressive defensive presence the U.S. converted 16 Slovenian turnovers into 22 points to lead at the break 66-49.

The U.S. led by as much as 29 in the third quarter before taking the foot of the throttle and cruising to the 114-95 victory.

With the victory the U.S. clinched a spot in the round of 16. They will face Italy Wednesday night in a battle of Group D unbeatens.
