Tom Cruise’s 14-year relationship has ended after the company severed ties with the one time Hollywood A-lister.
Saying his recent behavior “has not been acceptable to Paramount” Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone said “As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal.” Viacom is the parent company of Paramount.
How much of the decision was based on Cruise’s Oprah episode, or his outspoken views on anti-depressants, or his attack on psychiatry is unknown. What is known is that the man who once ruled the box office no longer garners the same support from movie-goers.
The less than expected turnout for Mission Impossible III and dwindling public support made the Paramount decision a little easier. Redstone attempted to keep the decision based on a business practice when he commented “As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal.”
