After an impressive showing at the French Open following a lengthy layoff Maria Sharapova was stunned by Gisela Dulko in the second round at Wimbledon on Wednesday, falling 2-6, 6-3, 4-6 at the All England Club.
Sharapova struggled all day with her serve, committing nine double faults and won just 38 percent of her second serve offerings while committing 27 unforced errors. Dulko was able to take advantage of the sloppy play from Sharapova, breaking the Russian’s serve on 5 of 12 opportunities.
Dulko has never won a Grand Slam singles title and her best finish at Wimbledon has been a third round appearance, something she has now done on four occasions. The 24-year-old Argentinean reached the fourth round at the French Open in 2006 but never passed the second round at the Australian Open or U.S. Open.
