A landmine planted by Maoist rebels killed four troops Friday in eastern India. Authorities say a convoy of 11 vehicles carrying Sashastra Seema Bal troops was traveling in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh state when one of the trucks hit the mine.
"This unit was deployed for anti-Maoist operations in Dantewada," said police officer Surjit Singh."The blast was powerful and the vehicle has been badly damaged."
Several troops were wounded. A gunfight broke out between troops and rebels after the explosion. No Maoist rebels were killed or wounded.
Maoist rebels claim to fight for the rights of the poor. They are supported by many tribal communities and impoverished areas.
