Ex Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh died in Chicago over the weekend. Chicago police spokesman Darryl Baety confirmed Welsh, 40, was found dead in his room at the Raffaello Hotel Saturday afternoon. Welsh’s death is under investigation, but it appears the rocker died of an accidental drug overdose. An autopsy was conducted Sunday afternoon and results are pending.
Wheezer confirmed Welsh’s death in a tweet. "We are shocked and deeply saddened to hear the awful news, our friend and fellow weez rocker @mikeywelsh71 has passed away. We love u Mikey,” the band wrote.
Just two weeks before his death, Welsh tweeted that he dreamed he died in Chicago. "dreamt i died in chicago next weekend (heart attack in my sleep). need to write my will today,” he wrote on September 26, later adding, "correction – the weekend after next."
Welsh joined Weezer when Matt Sharp left the band in 1998. He suffered a nervous breakdown three years later and left music to concentrate on painting. Welsh was replaced by Scott Shriner.
