SC Governor Mark Sanford Admits Affair, on Trial Separation From Wife

South Carolina governor Mark Sanford admitted in a press conference Wednesday that he had an extramarital affair with an Argentine woman.

Amid speculation over his whereabouts for the past several days, Sanford told reports he cheated on his wife of 20-years, Jenny Sanford, with a woman who was initially only a “dear friend.”

“I’ve been unfaithful to my wife. I developed a relationship with what started as a dear, dear friend from Argentina,” Sanford said at the news conference held in Columbia.

The 49-year-old said his relationship with the woman, who has not been identified, began with a friendship, but “over this last year, it developed into something much more than that.” The affair was discovered 5 months ago.

When questioned about his whereabouts since June 18, Sanford admitted to being in Buenos Aires, Argentina with the woman. Sanford has not been seen in public since the 18th and his staff told media outlets he was hiking in the Appalachian Trail.

Sanford, who is serving his second straight term as governor, said he is at fault for “shrouding this larger trip.”

“All I can say is that I apologize,” he said, adding he is trying to reconcile with his wife.

Sanford also resigned as head of the Republican Governors Association. Mississippi governor Haley Barbour will take over the position immediately.

In a statement, Jenny Sanford said she asked her husband to leave two week after learning of the affair but says it's only a trial separation. She says that she remains “willing to forgive Mark completely for his indiscretions and to welcome him back, in time, if he continues to work toward reconciliation with a true spirit of humility and repentance.”
