Authorities have confirmed an Italian cargo ship was attacked by a group of suspected Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean on Monday, but it remains unclear if the ship is under the control of the assailants. The last message sent out from the Montecristo said 5 armed men in a small boat had launched an attack against them about 620 miles off the coast of Somalia.
D’Alesio Group, the shipping company that owns the Montecristo, said the captain activated security measures shortly after the attack began. International and Italian authorities are trying to gather more information and locate the Montecristo. The crew of 23 includes residents of Italy, Ukraine and India.
No other details were available.
