U.S. Soccer Team Beats Top-Ranked Spain, 2-0, in FIFA Confederations Cup Upset

The U.S. national team defeated top-ranked Spain, 2-0, in a shocking upset in the FIFA Confederations' Cup on Wednesday.

Team USA now advances to the FIFA Confederations Cup final. They will face the winner of the South Africa-Brazil semifinal.

The win snapped Spain's 15-game win streak and 35-game unbeaten streak, which tied Brazil's world record from December 1993 to January 1996.

Jozy Altidore scored in the 27th minute and Clint Dempsey added a goal in the 74th as the Americans became the first team to defeat Spain since Romania in November 2006.

Altidore earned his first goal after getting past Villareal teammate Joan Capdevila to beat goalie Iker Casilas. Dempsey scored as Landon Donavan's cross bounced off of Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos.

Midfielder Michael Bradley, son of the coach, will miss the final. He received a red card for a late sliding tackle in the 87th minute, the third USA ejection of the tournament.

The United States had been 1-7-1 against top-ranked teams, beating Brazil in the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup and tying Argentina last summer in an exhibition at Giants Stadium.

This win against Spain ranks along with the 1998 Brazil win as the biggest upsets in American soccer history. Spain is currently ranked the top team in the world by FIFA.

The United States had lost its three previous matches against Spain, including a 1-0 in an exhibition on June 4 last year at Santander.
