It was a welcomed night for U.S. basketball as Dwyane Wade was able to watch from the bench as the Americans easily handled Senegal 103-58 Thursday. With all their stars enjoying a limited role in the blowout the victory kept the U.S. perfect in Group D play. They now advance to face Australia on Sunday, the Aussies finished fourth in Group C.
Once again the U.S. used offensive explosions to ignite their fifth victory in the tournament. A 19-0 run provided a 31-13 cushion that allowed several key starters an opportunity to rest and prepare for the round of 16 starting on Sunday.
Chris Bosh led all American scorers with 20 while pulling down 10 rebounds against the overmatched African team. LeBron James added 17 points in a reduced role while Carmelo Anthoney, coming off a 35 point performance against Italy, contributed 12 points in 14 minutes.
After the game the Americans made it known that they would not let up on the intensity that led them to finish group play perfect. Nor did they believe that any team in the second round would roll over for them.
Dwyane Wade said “It's the medal round, everyone is good. We've got to come in and prepare for them like we've been doing every other game and take it from there.” While Shane Battier commented “There are no grand illusions that this is going to be an easy road.”
Spain, Argentina and Greece won their respective groups, all going 5-0 in the initial round.
Dirk Nowitzki dropped 47 in Germany’s triple overtime victory against Angola to advance to the second round.
