Bomb Blast at Crowded Iraqi Market Kills at least 68, More than 100 Injured

A bomb blast at a crowded Iraqi market in Baghdad’s eastern Sadr City area has left at least 68 people dead and more than 130 injured in what is being called one of the worst attacks in the country this year.

According to police a device was detonated in the mainly Shia area of Baghdad and the ripped through the stalls and sent cars flying in the air. The attack has been blamed on Sunni militants who have tried to incite sectarian violence and prevent a lasting peace between the sects.

While the United States is scheduled to withdraw most of its 133,000 troops from Iraq’s cities and towns by the end of June there are many who now question that decision. Despite those concerns U.S. President Barack Obama has said the move to withdraw troops to military bases inside Iraq will continue.

Obama’s stance has been supported by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki who has said the U.S. withdrawal would be a victory for the country.
