Former Virginia Tech employee settles sexual harassment suit

A former employee for Virginia Tech has settled with the university over sexual harassment allegations stemming from a five-day training trip to Maryland in 2007.

Greta Hanes, who worked as a fund raiser for the university, agreed to accept a $60,000 settlement. A sexual harassment lawyer will assure that their client gets a favorable settlement either in or out of court.

In the initial lawsuit, Hanes alleges that her direct supervisor, Robert Bailey, treated a five-day training session “as if the trip was an extended date,” according to The Roanoke Times.

Hanes stated that while driving to the training sessions, Bailey asked her if she was single, and commented on how uncomfortable he was traveling with a young attractive woman. She also stated that Bailey wanted to work in her hotel, but she refused and the pair eventually went to his room to work.

While in his room, Bailey made Hanes feel uncomfortable by leaning over her while she was working on a computer and wearing pajama pants.

The lawsuit also alleges that Bailey held her to a higher standard than male employees and he fired her after she complained about the harassment, called retaliation by sexual harassment lawyers.

Virginia Tech agreed to settle with Hanes, but stated that the settlement does not mean the university agrees that there was any wrong-doing.

College campuses are often the scene of harassment and employees or students can hire a sexual harassment lawyer to help put an end to the problem.
