Hollywood Costume Designer Ray Aghayan Dies At 83

Legendary Hollywood costume designer Ray Aghayan has died. Aghayan, who won the first Emmy Award for costume design in 1967 for Alice Through the Looking Glass, died of unknown causes Tuesday in Los Angeles. Aghayan was 83 and is survived by his longtime partner and former assistant Bob Mackie.

Aghayan, who moved from Iran to Los Angeles as a teen, turned to costume designing after dabbling in acting, directing and producing. He created costumes for stars like Julie Andrews, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and Lucille Ball. Aghayan earned 9 total Emmy nominations and won 2 Emmy Awards in addition to his 1967 win.  He was also nominated for three Oscars for his work in Gaily Gaily, Lady Sings the Blues and Funny Lady. Aghayan’s film credits include The Art of Love, The Glass Bottom Boat, Caprice and Dr. Doolittle.
