Wimbledon 2009 Round 2 Results: Dinara Safina Battles through Another Early Round Match-Up, Drops Rossana De Los Rios in Straight Sets

Dinara Safina struggled on Thursday but moved one step closer to capturing her first career Grand Slam singles title after knocking off Rossana De Los Rios in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 at Wimbledon.

Safina delivered six aces in the match and managed to collect 27 winners and despite committing five double faults she never allowed De Los Rios to break her serve. Despite the double faults Safina put 72 percent of her first serves in play and won 81 percent of those offerings.

Safina has reached the finals of the French Open the last two years but fell to Ana Ivanovic in 2008 and then Svetlana Kuznetsova earlier this year. In 2009 she reached the finals at the Australian Open but again fell, this time to Serena Williams. Despite never winning a Grand Slam singles title Safina reached the number one in the rankings on April 27, 2009.
