Sky Saxon, the lead singer and bassist of the 60s rock
band Seeds, has died. Saxon died Thursday in an Austin, Texas hospital. He had
been in the ICU with an undisclosed illness since Monday. He was 63.
Saxon founded Seeds in 1965. The band included Daryl
Hooper, Jan Savage and Rick Andridge. In 1966, they released two albums – The Seeds
and A Web of Sound. Following the huge success of their singles Can’t Seem to
Make You Mine and Pushin’ Too Hard, the band released two more albums – Future and
A Full Spoon of Seedy Blues.
The group disbanded in the early ‘70s and Saxon joined a California
religious group, the Source Family. He often played with their band, the Ya Ho
Wa 13.
In 1989, Saxon and the Seeds reformed for a tour. They
toured again in 2003. Saxon most recently recorded music with the Smashing
Pumpkins.
Saxon fell ill last Thursday and was hospitalized. No details
on his illness or death were available. His wife, Sabrina Sherry Smith Saxon, announced
his death on her Facebook page saying, “Sky has passed over and YaHoWha is
waiting for him at the gate. He will soon be home with his Father. I'm so sorry
I couldn't keep him here with us. More later. I'm sorry.”
