Dan Wheldon Killed In Indy 300 Crash

A fiery, multi-car crash at the Las Vegas Indy 300 Sunday afternoon resulted in the death of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon. IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said Wheldon, 33, died at a hospital of “unsurvivable injuries.” The Emberton, England native is survived by his wife and two young children.

The crash happened on turn 2 in lap 13. Fifteen cars were involved and three drivers -- Will Power, J.R. Hildebrand and Pippa Mann – received treatment for their injuries. The race was canceled after the crash and drivers paid tribute to Wheldon by doing 5 slow laps while “Amazing Grace” played.

"IndyCar is sad to announce that Dan Wheldon passed away from unsurvivable injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dan and his family," said IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard.
