The Horrible Cycle of Drug Addiction

What is drug Addiction

It is an all-too-common scenario: A person experiments with an addictive drug like cocaine – just to try it out for the experience of it.

It turns out, though, that the individual enjoys the drug's euphoric effect so much that in ensuing weeks and months the person uses it again -- and again. But in due time, it is time to quit, this is
drug addiciton.

Despite the short-term high from using cocaine, the long-term consequences of its use are perilous and the drug abuser senses this – but often long after they have lost control.

With continued use of the drug, the body's ability to produce certain chemicals is diminished because natural functions are replaced by the drug. Cravings occur if the drug is not available.

The body perceives that it needs the drug to function and demands the drug, through physical cravings.

Drug cravings become so severe that the addict will do almost anything (in many cases, abandoning all previous moral teachings) to get more of the drug.

People who are addicted will find themselves doing things they would never have contemplated before.

The addict commits misdeeds against family, friends, and themselves to satisfy unrelenting cravings. These misdeeds include lying, stealing, cheating, anything to get the drugs to satisfy the drug cravings.

Because of these misdeeds, and the attendant feelings of guilt and shame, the person is now entrapped in full blown drug addiction.

Unfortunately many people can put a face and a name to the story just described – Almost everyone is touched by someone addicted.

No matter what they say, if they haven't quit using drugs by now, they won't - not without help.  No matter their behavior the drug addict is counting on someone to help them.
