A Tibetan nun protesting China’s rule of Tibet and calling for the Dali Lama’s return died Monday after setting herself on fire. The London-based Free Tibet group identified the woman as 20-year-old Tenzin Wangmo. The incident occurred in Ngaba County, Sichuan Province outside the Dechen Chokorling Nunnery.
According to Free Tibet, Tenzin is the fifth Tibetan to die by committing self-immolation since March. Four others have survived self-immolation. All eight previous cases have involved monks or former monks.
Free Tibet Director Stephanie Brigden said that these incidents show unrest in Tibet is "escalating and widening.” "The acts of self-immolation are not taking place in isolation, protests have been reported in the surrounding region and calls for wider protests are growing," she said.
