RIM announced a series of developer tool updates, including WebWorks for BlackBerry smartphones and tablets, the Native SDK for the BlackBerry PlayBook and a developer beta of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 with support for running Android applications. The Waterloo, Canada-headquartered company said the BBX platform is designed from the ground up to enable the powerful real-time mobile experiences that distinguish BlackBerry products and services. The BBX platform will include BBX-OS, and will support BlackBerry cloud services and development environments for both HTML5 and native developers. Franklin Electric Co. (NASDAQ: FELE) - Standard & Poor's, a subsidiary of The McGraw-Hill Companies Inc., announced that Franklin Electric Co. will replace Arch Chemicals Inc. (NYSE: ARJ) in the S&P SmallCap 600 index after the close of trading on October 19, 2011. In July 2011, Biocides company Arch Chemicals had said it agreed to be acquired by Lonza Group Ltd (LZAGF.PK), a Swiss supplier of drug ingredients, through a tender offer for $47.20 per share in cash. As per the deal, the germs control product maker's enterprise value would be $1.4 billion or about 1.25 billion Swiss francs.

Hologic Inc. (NASDAQ: HOLX) Tuesday 10/18/11, reported an adverse jury verdict in suit filed against the company by Conceptus, Inc. alleging patent infringement by the Adiana permanent contraception system. The jury awarded Conceptus the sum of $18.8 million as damages. Hologic said the payment would have no impact on its results of operations or financial position as it would be deducted from the contingent consideration otherwise due to former Adiana, Inc. shareholders. On May 22, 2009, Conceptus filed suit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California alleging infringement of five Conceptus patents by the Adiana permanent contraception system. Allegations regarding all but two claims of the asserted patents were previously dismissed from the suit. A trial on the two remaining patent claims took place in October 2011 resulting in a jury verdict in favor of Conceptus. Mark Casey, Hologic's senior vice president and general counsel, said," We are obviously disappointed in this verdict. However, there remain several issues to be decided by the Court which could impact the ultimate disposition of the case. Upon resolution of those issues, the Company will evaluate its options. In the meantime, the Company will continue to sell, market and promote the Adiana System."
