Billions lost due to alcohol abuse

Alcohol abuse costs taxpayers billions

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently published a report in the November 2011 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine which indicates that the impact of alcohol abuse costs the US economy nearly $225 billion annually. Of that $225 billion per year, the CDC has estimated that federal and local governments pay nearly $135 billion annually for health care costs.

“This CDC report shows that most of the costs come from binge drinking, which is a dangerous problem facing many underage and college age young adults,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “For that reason alone, combating binge drinking should be one of the number one issues that the public confronts and deals with immediately.”

Seventy-two percent of the costs due to alcohol abuse came from lost workplace productivity, and 11 percent came from direct health care costs; nearly 10 percent of the costs associated with alcohol abuse came from increased law enforcement expenses.

Binge drinking is defined as consuming 4 or more drinks at a time for women and 5 or more drinks at a time for men. It’s a growing problem that is often associated with underage and college-age drinkers, but can affect any given demographic. If you or a loved one suspect that someone in your life has a problem with binge drinking, alcoholism or any other type of substance abuse, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can assist you in helping them begin the journey to recovery and living a life of sobriety.
