The National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse has just released a guide for medical practitioners giving directives on screening for alcohol abuse among teens.
Within the guide are two key questions for young people that they believe will assist in identifying potential underage drinking. Those two key questions are:
• Do you have any friends who drank beer, wine or any drink containing alcohol in the past year?
• How about you? In the past year, on how many days have you had more than a few sips of beer, wine or any drink containing alcohol?
“These two questions can unlock a wealth of insight into our teens,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside

If we know that an individual has friends who drink, either by experimenting or on a regular basis, we can help guide and steer the individual into making better choices for themselves. Research shows that 7 percent of 12 year olds have experimented with and had more than a few sips of alcohol. That figure rises dramatically to over 70 percent among 18 year olds. In addition, research shows that binge drinking also increases as those who are underage become older.
