UN Drug Abuse Report Indicates Need for Drug Treatment

On June 26, 2009 the United Nations is observing the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which was initially started back in 1987 when voted on by the UN’s General Assembly.  According to their web-site, the day was to be observed as “an expression of the UN’s determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an International society free of drug abuse.”

Twenty-two years later, in recognition of the day, a report was released by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, stating that special attention needs to be paid to the negative impact of drug-related crime and showing support for effective drug prevention and
drug treatment as a solution.

In addition, the report offers several recommendations on how to improve drug control and grant access to drug rehabilitation, but what is really needed here are drug prevention and rehabilitation programs that get results.

Narconon drug rehabilitation and education centers have for years joined in on celebrating the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s (UNODC) International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This year’s anti-drug day theme is “Do drugs control your life? Your life. Your community. No place for drugs.” This message parallels exactly what Narconon lecturers present every day in live drug education talks, reaching nearly 750,000 yearly.

And since 1966, Narconon has been delivering a drug and alcohol treatment program that now operates in 50 countries delivering drug rehabilitation that achieves a more than 70% success rate for permanent recovery while also focusing efforts on and drug education and prevention in each center.

According to the Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, Gil Kerlikowske, “The World Drug Report 2009 demonstrates that drugs are a problem that touches every nation. All of us have a responsibility to address drug abuse within our societies. Internationally, the Obama Administration is committed to expanding demand reduction initiatives to ensure that all those struggling to overcome addiction, especially in developing countries, have access to effective treatment programs.”  Mr. Kerlikowske goes on to say that the Administration has become educated on addiction as well as
drug treatment programs as well as demand reduction.

Narconon has been a leader in rehabilitation and prevention programs for several decades and uses the proven drug-free rehabilitation methodology based on research and developments of American author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard.
