Alcohol Abuse at Colleges on the Rise
The consequences of alcohol abuse
New studies find the rise in alcohol use at colleges and universities troubling. Several recent studies have found that drinking among college age kids brings increase risk of drug abuse.
Alcohol consumption of college students is almost a given. College is when many young adults experiment with drugs and alcohol for the first time.
The consequences of alcohol abuse for college age kids are:
- 1,700 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from alcohol-related unintentional injuries, including motor vehicle crashes
- 31%of college students met criteria for a diagnosis of alcohol abuse and 6 percent for a diagnosis of alcohol dependence in the past 12 months
- 500,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are unintentionally injured under the influence of alcohol
- More than 600,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are assaulted by another student who has been drinking
- More than 70,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are victims of alcohol-related sexual assault or date rape
- 400,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 have unprotected sex and more than 100,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 report having been too intoxicated to know if they consented to having sex
These are serious consequences. College should be a place for kids to start a life not end up dead, pregnant or in jail.
