Libyan rebel fighters broke out into celebratory gunfire Thursday after conflicting reports surfaced of the capture and death of former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. The reports hit media stations as the last of Gadhafi’s loyal forces were driven out of his hometown of Sirte. Revolutionary forces are now in control of the city.
It was during the fall of Sirte that Gadhafi was allegedly captured or killed. Two commanders of revolutionary forces gave different accounts of Gadhafi’s fate. A commander with the Misrata Military Council reported his fighters had captured Gadhafi on Thursday while another commander said Gadhafi was killed in an airstrike that targeted a convoy attempting to leave the city.
A spokesman with the National Transitional Council said none of the reports have been confirmed. He told CNN that it is unlikely Gadhafi was in or around Sirte. NATO officials speaking anonymously said they could not confirm or deny the rumors either.
