New Procedure Makes Lasik Safe and Affordable
iLasik, a new procedure that uses algorithms to customize treatment to the individual patient, has revolutionized the Lasik industry. Available in medical offices around the country, iLasik takes the basic technology of Lasik surgery a step further, modernizing it with computer software.
Lasik has rapidly become one of the most popular corrective procedures, with more than eight million Americans having undergone the laser eye surgery since it was first approved in 1995. Unfortunately, many vision-impaired Americans considering the surgery are still hesitant, some due to the misconception that the surgery is extremely expensive. Others hesitate because they believe the technology has not yet been perfected.
After more than fifteen years, complications from Lasik surgeries are almost nonexistent. In fact, WebMD reported in 2006 statistics revealing contact lens wearers suffered more of a risk of complications than Lasik patients. According to the medical website, one in 100 contact lens wearers will suffer a serious infection with 30 years of wear, with complications including permanent loss of vision in one in 1,000 patients. Lasik patients, the site said, have a one in 10,000 chance of side effects.
iLasik takes the safety of Lasik one step further. Using computer software to diagram a patient’s eye prior to the procedure, the laser need only follow the path outlined on the computer. In practice since 2005, iLasik technology has been approved for use by the U.S. military and NASA.
Like Lasik, iLasik uses a laser to reshape the cornea. In order to do this, a flap is created in order to expose the stroma, which is the interior of the cornea. This is often said to be the most uncomfortable part of the process for patients, with flap creation requiring a blade. iLasik has made this part of the process easier, however, by using a laser to create the flap. Also called “bladeless Lasik,” iLasik has become popular with patients for this simplification.
However, iLasik has much more to offer. With the computer tracing out its route ahead of time, there is less room for error, with the computer exacting precision with each surgery. The computer blueprint created prior to surgery makes your experience unique, as your surgery is customized to your eye. You’ll have the same speed and convenience as Lasik, but with iLasik, you’ll have the latest technology on your side.
Recovery is likely to be quicker, as well. Studies have shown that iLasik has few incidents of dry eye, as well as less of a need for post-surgery retouches. Experts also say there may be less chance of an eye infection, as the laser that creates the flap is less likely to contaminate the cornea with particles.
Pricing can vary based on locale and practitioner experience. Experts caution against choosing doctors who advertise extraordinarily low prices, as the fine print on those ads often excludes most patients. Do extensive research and ask friends for referrals before deciding on the best iLasik specialist for you.
