President Barack Obama Meets with German Chancellor Angela Merkel Friday

President Barack Obama held a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the White House on Friday.

The two also held a joint press conference at the White House after their meeting to discuss their conversations.

Obama was impressed by Merkel, calling her "smart" and adding that he can trust what she says. Obama said that the citizens of Germany have showered him with "great warmth and affection" and that he will "always have a warm spot for Germany".

Obama stated that he and Merkel have a shared commitment to the fight against global warming, and to reforming the world's financial system. They also spoke of their shared battle against terrorism and for peace in the Middle East.

Obama said that he believes European nations have moved faster than the United States in regards to global warming and that he would like to see the U.S. take a greater leadership world in environmental issues.

"We are still working through the framework through which we could lead the international effort," said Obama. He also said he was hopeful the House would pass a global warming bill later Friday, and said that would be a good start.

This is the third time the two have met since Obama’s presidential election. They met while he was on the campaign when he went on his European tour. The two will meet again soon at a summit of the Group of Eight industrial nations in Italy in early July, and at a Group of 20 summit planned in Pittsburgh in September.
