Wimbledon 2009 Round 3 Results: Roger Federer Needs Four Sets but Gets Past Philipp Kohlschreiber to Advance

Roger Federer has inched closer to surpassing the career record for Grand Slam men’s singles titles on Friday after getting past Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 in the third round of Wimbledon at the All England Club.

Federer once again used a dominant serve as he fired off 15 aces in the match while committing just two double faults. Kohlschreiber actually collected more winners, 51-48, but he gave Federer 22 break point opportunities and the Swiss star capitalized on seven of those opportunities.

Federer is sitting on 14 career Grand Slam singles titles, tying him with Pete Sampras for most all time. He recently captured his first title at the French Open, marking a career Grand Slam for Federer as he has won Wimbledon five times, the U.S. Open five times and the Australian Open three times.
