Saad Hariri has been named as the new prime minister of Lebanon nearly three weeks after his pro-Western alliance captured a majority in the country’s parliamentary elections.
President Michel Suleiman made the announcement after 86 MPs backed Hariri’s nomination and now, as the new PM, he will need to form a cabinet that will help heal the deep divide that currently exists between rival parties.
Hariri has pledged to form a national unity government and declared, “In line with our commitment during the election campaign in favor of a national unity government in which the main parliamentary blocs are represented... we will begin consultations with all parliamentary blocs.”
The 39-year-old Hariri is the son of former PM Rafik Hariri who was assassinated in a car bombing in Feb. 2005.
