Melanie Oudin continued her stunning run through the early rounds at the All England Club with her biggest victory yet after knocking off the heavily favored Jelena Jankovic in three sets 6-7 (8-10), 7-5, 6-2 in a match that lasted nearly three hours.
Oudin was able to maintain control of her serve and that proved to be the difference as the American won 72 percent of her first serves put in play to overcome the seven double faults committed. Oudin collected 38 winners in the match compared to just 13 winners for Jankovic.
Oudin, just 17-years-old, had never been out of the first round at a Grand Slam singles event prior to this year’s Wimbledon. She lost in the first round at the 2008 U.S. Open and again in the first round at the 2009 Australian Open.
