Wimbledon 2009 Round 3 Results: Amelie Mauresmo Advances at All England Club After Straight Set Victory Over Flavia Pennetta

Amelie Mauresmo continues to try and push her way back to the top of women’s tennis and on Saturday she took a big step with a straight set victory over Flavia Pennetta 7-5, 6-3 in the third round at Wimbledon, home to one of her two Grand Slam singles titles.

Mauresmo relied heavily on her powerful serve and despite eight double faults she also managed to hammer out eight aces. For Pennetta it was her inability to take advantage of opportunities presented as she had ten chances to break Mauresmo’s serve yet capitalized just once.

Mauresmo is a former world number one and has two Grand Slam singles titles, Wimbledon and the Australian Open, but both those came in 2006. In 2007 she failed to get past the quarterfinals in the Australian Open, fell in the third round at the French Open and then the fourth round at Wimbledon before electing not to play in the U.S. Open. In 2008 she failed to get past the fourth round in any of the Grand Slam events and in 2009 she has had early exits in the first two Grand Slam events.
