Iraqi Authorities Prepare for U.S. Troop Withdrawal from Country’s Cities

Iraqi authorities have stepped up their preparations for the United States planned troop withdrawal from the country’s cities, cancelling all police leave and ordering extra troops as a means of tightening security.

The U.S. troops are scheduled to withdraw by the end of June and take position in bases stationed just outside urban areas. Those troops will then assist Iraqi forces when requested but Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has expressed confidence that the government will be able to maintain civilian security.

That security has been a concern for many as a recent surge in violence has led to questions about the government’s ability to prevent deadly attacks. Maliki has blamed the recent attacks on those trying to incite sectarian violence and insisted their efforts will not undermine the government.

Iraqi authorities have blamed Sunni militants for the recent bombings that have targeted mainly Shia areas. Those targets have included heavily populated mosques and markets and over the last week more than 250 people have been killed.

Despite the attacks Maliki has insisted, “But this will not bend our determination and will for what we have agreed upon - that is, to return security responsibilities to our military and police forces.”
