Chance of alcohol relapse may be predicted

Insight into alcohol relapse

While much research has been conducted throughout the years regarding addiction and alcoholism, few findings have been found to predict potential for relapse for those suffering from alcoholism.

Yale School of Medicine researchers may have found a way to predict which individuals have a greater chance of relapse after alcoholism treatment.

Researchers studied patients who had received four weeks of alcoholism treatment at the Connecticut Mental Health Center. Using an MRI to measure gray matter areas in the brain that are associated with impulse control, they found that the patients who relapsed in a shorter span of time were those who had decreased gray matter within the brain.

“New studies emerge within the addiction field on a regular basis,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “This latest one from the Yale School of Medicine is very encouraging for those of us who are on the frontlines working with clients face-to-face. Preventing relapse within the first year is the most challenging aspect of recovery. With studies such as this one, we are able to decide upon the best treatment modalities that are the most effective for each patient on an individualized basis”.
