FIFA Confederations Cup Final: Brazil Overcomes 2-0 Deficit, Drops United States 3-2 to Repeat as Champions
After one half of action on Sunday it appeared as if the United States may pull off one of the most improbable victories in its soccer history as it held a 2-0 lead over powerhouse Brazil but a second half surge by the yellow and blue ended that dream and the South American nation captured the FIFA Confederations Cup final 3-2.
The United States got on the board in the ninth minute of action after Clint Dempsey managed to sneak the ball in the back of the net and 17 minutes later that lead was inflated to 2-0 following a goal from Landon Donovan and Brazil looked stunned. With Tim Howard in goal and the U.S. defense clamping down on the high-powered offense of Brazil that lead held until the half and it looked as if the Americans were within 45 minutes of their first FIFA title.
That all changed six minutes into the second half as a more aggressive Brazil pressured the U.S. defense and Luis Fabiano ended the scoring drought to cut the Americans lead to 2-1. With the momentum shifted the U.S. looked more like a team trying to hang on rather than a squad that believed they would win. That proved costly in the 73rd minute when Fabiano put his second goal past Howard to even the score at 2-2 and it was evident that the Americans were rattled.
It felt like it would be just a matter of time before the Brazilians would take the lead and in the 83rd minute a corner kick proved to be that moment as Elano delivered a beautiful ball over the middle that Lucio headed home and that 3-2 lead proved to hold.
