Dorothy Rodham, the mother of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has died. Rodham was surrounded by family when she passed away shortly after midnight Tuesday in Washington D.C. Rodham was 92. The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Clinton family confirmed Rodham’s death in a statement. "Her story was a quintessentially American one, largely because she wrote it herself. She overcame abandonment and hardship as a young girl to become the remarkable woman she was – a warm, generous and strong woman; an intellectual; a woman who told a great joke and always got the joke; an extraordinary friend and, most of all, a loving wife, mother and grandmother,” the family said. "Her family is and will be forever grateful for the gift of Dorothy's life and for the memories they will treasure forever."
A private event celebrating Rodham’s life is being planned. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to George Washington Hospital, Heifer Project or charities that benefit children.
In addition to Hillary, Rodham leaves behind sons Hugh and Tony, as well as four grandchildren. Rodham’s husband Hugh died in 1993.
