Cancer risk could increase with regular alcohol consumption

Regular alcohol consumption causes concern

According to a new study, regular alcohol consumption may raise the long-term risk of various types of cancers.

The correlation between alcohol consumption and cancers suggests that moderate drinking can, in some cases, raise the risks of certain types of cancer, such as mouth and esophageal cancers. The risk of breast cancer increases with a mere three drinks per week, the U.K.’s Million Women Study shows.

“The clear message of the various studies is that alcohol consumption must be closely monitored,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “While the risks of alcohol consumption are cumulative, and naturally not everyone who consumes alcohol will get cancer, we must not ignore studies such as these.”

The risks for the majority of cancers rise after three drinks per day in men and two drinks daily in women. Researchers are currently attempting to determine the correlation between alcohol consumption and cancer so that they can more accurately pinpoint why cancer risk is increased. Current theories range from an increase in estrogen production as alcohol consumption is increased.

While moderate alcohol consumption doesn’t necessarily lead to alcoholism, some who moderately drink may, indeed, be at an increased risk for alcohol abuse.
