For those battling addiction, the same issues seem to crop up again and again unless they’re dealt with thoroughly. When Michael Lohan was on Celebrity Rehab last season, his fellow treatment patients ominously predicted he’d end up arrested shortly after the program ended. Within a week, their prediction came true. Now, the father of troubled actress Lindsay Lohan is back behind bars.
The other celebrities Lohan sought treatment with didn’t have any kind of psychic powers. Anyone who watched the show could see his anger issues and misguided desire to rescue others would land him in trouble. Dr. Drew and others who oversaw his treatment also voiced concern over his aftercare plan and busy travel schedule that kept him from checking in regularly with a sponsor or mentor.
This latest round of trouble found Lohan, 51, arrested in Tampa this week on suspicion of domestic violence, according to local police. The report explains that police responded to a domestic violence call at Lohan's home, and “upon arrival, Mr. Lohan was arrested for battery on his live-in girlfriend.”
Shortly after he was taken into custody, Lohan complained of chest pains and was taken to a hospital to be checked, police said. “A short time later, Mr. Lohan checked himself out and was placed under arrest.”
As if that weren’t enough drama, Lohan was arrested again later in the week after jumping from a third-floor balcony in attempt to escape re-arrest. He was held the second time after his girlfriend, Kate Major, said he violated terms of his release from jail earlier this week by calling her, the Tampa Police Department said in a statement.
In an incident in March 2011, Lohan was arrested in Los Angeles in connection with alleged domestic violence and was charged with one misdemeanor count of corporal injury to a cohabitant.
There has been no official claim that drugs were involved, but for anyone who is in recovery for substance abuse, the arrests would be a giant red flag. Statistics show that drinking proceeds acts of family violence in 25 to 50 percent of all cases. Also, alcohol and drug abuse increase the likelihood of domestic violence, not only during periods of intoxication, but also during periods of sobriety, according to the Tennessee Association of Alcohol, Drug & other Addiction Services (TAADAS).
While dealing with his own issues, Lohan has been outspoken about his daughter’s need for more serious help. Lohan and Lindsay have been estranged for some time, although the two did participate in family counseling together while she was undergoing treatment as part of a court-ordered program.
