An attack targeting the compound of a NATO contractor based in Herat, Afghanistan on Thursday left two Afghan security guards and five insurgents dead.
Local officials say the attack on ESCO, an Italian logistics and supply company, began around 10 a.m. when car bombs were detonated at two entrances of the building. Three insurgents wearing Afghan army uniforms then stormed the compound and took ESCO employees hostage. Afghan forces exchanged fire with the attackers for several hours and eventually killed all three. The hostages were freed and the compound was secured.
Officials say at least 5 people were injured. One of the injured is a soldier with NATO’s International Security Assistance Force. ISAF is investigating the attack.
