2012 Trends for Web Design

As the Internet grows and adapts, businesses redesign their sites to get an edge

Web design is constantly changing, and with the new technology and Internet abilities of the year, new trends are emerging. The trends for ecommerce website design focus on user experience and simplicity, but here are some things that stand out, according to website design company WebConcepts.com.

·      -- The fold is dead – The idea of the fold (the point on the screen where users would have to scroll to see more) is no longer as relevant since viewers are no longer restricted to computer monitors. Internet users can surf the Web on anything as small as their smart phone to something as large as their flat screen television.

·       -- Mobile sites are becoming increasingly important – While mobile-friendly sites have been the norm for the past few years, it is now becoming popular to design entire mini-sites that are specifically made for smaller screens only. These companion sites require short messaging and simplistic designs because of limited screen real estate, and the links need to be formatted to work for a touch screen.

“We’re seeing things portrayed in a much more visual sense,” said Nick Cook, president of WebConcepts.com. “You can say a lot with images, and people are becoming more comfortable with icons because of mobile technology and the familiarity of the Internet.”

With that being said, the custom web design company remarks that massive graphics are beginning to take over websites due to faster loading methods, quicker Wi-Fi connections and image clarity. Subtle textures that repeat in a natural way are dominating the Internet and more and more designs are taking on an infographic feel.

“There’s a lot more freedom in Web design now,” said Cook. “With the way the Internet is evolving, more is becoming possible every day.”
