Scientific Conference Song: A World Without AIDS
The ISHEID (International Symposium on HIV & Emerging Infectious Diseases) will be held in Marseilles (France), 23-25 May 2012. This scientific meeting will welcome more than 1,500 participants from all over the world, including researchers, doctors, and activists, all united for a cause: “Searching for an HIV Cure”.
Dan Bull, a renowned UK singer, has just released his last title, “A world without AIDS”, dedicated to the 2012 ISHEID.
"His song strongly tells what AIDS is, the stigmatization coming from it, and the commitment of researchers to finally find a cure" said Alain Lafeuillade, Chair of the ISHEID.
The song can be downloaded free of charge on the meeting website: www.isheid.com
The ISHEID meeting will cover the topic of HIV cure in different sessions, including sessions on the mechanisms of HIV persistence, reservoirs maintenance and acute HIV infection. The Steering Committee contains the main international leaders in the field including Pr Gatell (Spain), Pr Vella (Italy), Pr Delfraissy (France), Pr Stellbrink (Germany).
Currently, HIV infects more than 34 million individuals worldwide and more than 7,000 new cases of infection occur daily. Most patients in resource-poor areas do not have access to antiretroviral therapy or are on a failing first line regimen. Both an anti-HIV vaccine, for those who are not yet infected, and a cure for those who already are, would be the only way to stop the pandemic.
HIV cure is the big challenge of the next decade. Thanks to majors advances achieved in the last two years, we now have get a better understanding of the mechanisms allowing HIV latency in reservoir cells, and new therapeutic approaches trying to eradicate this retrovirus have reached clinical testing. First results of these trials will be presented at the ISHEID.
